Transformation of Newry City Centre
The proposed development will see the construction of a new Theatre and Conference Centre and a Civic and Regional Hub alongside public realm in Newry City and forms part of the Belfast City Region Deal infrastructure project.
The plan for the new Theatre and Conference Centre proposes the renovation of the Grade 2 listed Newry Town Hall and construction of a modern multi-functional venue with a 255-seater theatre, inked by a glazed atrium, on the site of the neighbouring Sean Hollywood Arts Centre. A Contractor was appointed in early 2026 with building works scheduled to begin in the summer. The new facility is expected to be completed and open to the public in Spring 2028.
Proposed spaces in the Civic and Regional Hub include reception, interview/meeting, Council chamber, open plan office and breakout areas. In June 2023 a planning application was submitted for the new Civic and Regional Hub.
This project is designed to regenerate the city’s historic core, promote opportunities for further investment from the public and private sectors and increase Newry’s attractiveness as a place to live, visit and do business.
