Construction is now underway on the new Theatre and Conference Centre in Newry city centre, a flagship regeneration project being delivered by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.
A recent sod-cutting ceremony marked the official start of works on the Β£21.3 million development, which is supported by the Belfast Region City Deal and the Shared Island Initiative. The project forms a key part of the wider Newry City Centre Regeneration Programme and is expected to open in Spring 2028.
Woodvale Construction has been appointed to deliver the scheme, which includes the restoration of the historic Grade II-listed Newry Town Hall and the construction of a new multi-functional theatre and conference facility on the neighbouring Sean Hollywood Arts Centre site. The two buildings will be connected by a glazed atrium, creating a modern cultural and business destination for the city.
Speaking at the ceremony, Communities Minister Gordon Lyons MLA described the project as an investment that will help “unlock the potential of Newry City and the wider district, creating new opportunities for culture, regeneration and economic growth.”
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Philip Campbell, said the development represents “a significant commitment to our cultural infrastructure” and will provide a modern venue that supports both the creative sector and new business opportunities.
Once complete, the Theatre and Conference Centre will provide enhanced theatre, conference and event facilities, supporting economic growth, tourism and the continued regeneration of Newry city centre.
The esc team is proud to be providing Project Management and Quantity Surveying services on this landmark project and looks forward to working alongside the Council, Woodvale Construction, the design team led by Hamilton Architects, and the wider project team as construction progresses.
