Derry City & Strabane District Council has appointed esc construction consultants to lead the design and construction management of a new circa £42 million state-of-the-art leisure centre in Strabane.
esc will head an Integrated Consultancy Team responsible for delivering the ambitious project which is pursuing Passivhaus accreditation, embedding towards net-zero principles to minimise carbon impact in line with the Council’s sustainability goals.
The proposed facility will include a fully accessible main pool with sauna and steam rooms, a separate leisure and teaching pool, and dedicated children’s water play areas. Additional amenities will feature a fitness suite, wellness spa, multi-use studios, café, conference and meeting rooms, squash court, spin studio, and wet and dry changing facilities.
esc brings extensive experience from major leisure and sports projects across Northern Ireland, including Olympia Leisure Centre and Spa, the National Football Stadium, Affidea Stadium, and the redevelopment of Dundonald International Ice Bowl.
Design work is now underway, with pre-planning engagement expected in Summer 2026 and completion targeted for the 2029/30 financial year, subject to approvals.
esc is also providing Quantity Surveying services on the Templemore Strategic Leisure project as part of the McAdam Design Ltd Integrated Consultant Team. A transformative circa £100 million development, Templemore will deliver a landmark leisure destination with Olympic-standard swimming, indoor sports halls, advanced fitness and wellness facilities, and extensive outdoor pitches and trails, while also adhering to industry-leading Passivhaus net-zero design principles.
Pat Mullan, Director at esc, welcomed the appointment, saying:
“We are delighted to have been awarded the Strabane Leisure Centre contact by Derry City & Strabane District Council. Acting as Lead Consultant, Project Manager and Cost Consultant, our team will ensure this significant leisure project is delivered to the highest standards of quality, sustainability and value, while meeting programme targets. We are also proud to support the Council as Quantity Surveyors on the Templemore Strategic Leisure project.”
Both developments highlight the Council’s strong commitment to enhancing community wellbeing while advancing environmental responsibility through sustainable infrastructure investment.
